Technology for truck drivers has changed and drastically transformed many industries over the last few decades — the trucking industry is no exception. CB radios used to be a trucker’s go-to tech tool on the road, but that was then and this is now. Here’s a look at a few of the tech developments that have shaped today’s trucking industry:
Electronic Logging Devices
An Electronic Logging Device, also referred to as an ELD or an E-Log, is a piece of hardware attached to a truck’s engine. An ELD captures data on whether the engine is running, if the truck is moving, what distance has been traveled and more. Prior to this development, drivers had to take the time to fill out paper logs. An ELD saves valuable time, with fewer manual errors, giving drivers more time to rest. ELDs also improve safety by preventing drivers from staying on the road too long without stopping to rest.
GPS Tracking Tools
We’re not talking about a run-of-the-mill GPS on your smartphone or a Garmin you can buy at a big box store. Truck drivers benefit from a top-of-the-line GPS system that includes specialized information like fuel prices, bridge weight limits, truck stop and weigh station locations and more. This type of GPS also helps customers and colleagues by providing up-to-date delivery time estimates.
Online Route Finders
In the past, finding a truck route that fit your individual needs and requirements could be tricky and time-consuming. Now, route finders make it easier to find the most efficient route.
Wi-fi and Mobile Hot Spots
Wi-fi and mobile hot spots have made it easier for drivers to stay entertained and connected while on the road. From podcasts and music streaming to watching your favorite Netflix series while resting — not to mention being able to FaceTime with loved ones at the end of the day — it’s made long hours seem shorter and can help drivers decompress. And voice command features make it easy to use certain programs and features hands-free — to keep a driver’s eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.
